Despite Majority of Possession, Galaxy Fall to Whitecaps 1-0

LA Galaxy

The Los Angeles Galaxy possessed the ball for 61 percent of the game, but that statistic doesn’t matter. The one that does: goals.

The Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Galaxy 1-0 after sustained pressure from LA throughout the night at StubHub Center. The loss is the Galaxy’s fourth in a row as LA’s struggles continue.

LA  lined up with a strong backline featuring Jelle van Damme and Daniel Steres in the center back spots while Ashley Cole was placed in midfield by manager Curt Onalfo.

LA put pressure on the Whitecaps backline early, and Jack McBean saw a header on a Diallo cross narrowly miss the crossbar inside the first four minutes of the game.

A Whitecaps corner kick curled off the top of Brian Rowe’s crossbar and the Galaxy managed to clear.

Then, Romain Alessandrini saw a shot from the left wing tipped wide of the goal.

After a half an hour of play, the Galaxy had the bulk of the chances but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.

Emmanuel Boateng was taken down in the box just before the half, but the vast protests from Galaxy players fell on deaf ears.

At halftime, the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 as LA looked the better of the two sides.

LA continued to put the pressure on in the second half as Dave Romney had a header saved off the line by David Ousted, keeping the game scoreless.

After all that pressure, Vancouver went ahead after a Christian Bolaños free kick was headed home by Tony Tchani. Rowe got a hand to it but couldn’t keep it out of his net.

Following the goal, LA failed to pick themselves up and get one past Ousted, as the Whitecaps held on to win 1-0.
