Last night the Los Angeles Angels fell short to the Oakland Athletics 6-3 in game one of this series of four. Athletics starting pitcher Kendall Graveman (1-1, 6.94 ERA, 3.0 IP 2 ER) faced Matt Shoemaker (2-1, 6.46 ERA, 3.0 IP, 5 ER) (L) as both starting pitchers did not play past the third inning. The bats were ready from the start as Oakland was quick to score in the top of the first inning. Athletics first baseman Ike Davis hit a sacrifice fly to left field as Sam Fuld scored to give the Athletics a 1-0 lead.

The Angels offense soon showed up as both Mike Trout and Albert Pujols hit singles to center field. Matt Joyce grounded out to first base as Trout and Pujols advanced to second and third base. This was when David Freese came up clutch with a two-run RBI single that put the Angels up 2-1 at the end of the first inning. It wasn’t though until the top of the third inning when Oakland took the again. Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt hit a three-run homer to right field as Oakland went up 4-2. However in the bottom of third Albert Pujols hit an RBI single that brought in Mike Trout as they trailed 4-3.

Once the Athletics offense took advantage of Matt Shoemaker in the third inning, they continued to hit off of him again. Short stop Marcus Semien hit his second home run of the season as Oakland was in control at 5-3. There were no runs scored until the ninth inning when Sam Fuld hit a sacrifice fly to left field as Eric Sogard scored the final run in the game for a 6-3 game one win.

Tonight at 7:05 PM PT Oakland Athletics starter Drew Pomeranz (1-1, 3.00 ERA) will take on Hector Santiago (1-1,  2.92 ERA) in game two of this American League West matchup.
