Starlin Castro Hits Walk Off Single, Padres Lose In 11th 7-6

Starlin Castro hit a walk off single in the 11th and Miguel Montero hit two home runs this afternoon as the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 7-6 in extra innings. After the highly anticipated debut of Kris Bryant was unsuccessful the Cubs and Bryant looked for revenge today.

Tyson Ross got the start for the Padres. He pitched 5.2 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs while striking out 9. Ross did have trouble with location as he walked 5 during his outing. He was awarded a no decision.

For the Cubs Kyle Hendricks got the nod. He pitched 6 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 8. He was awarded a no decision as well.

Matt Kemp got the Padres started in the first inning with a two run shot to left. His home run brought in Yonder Alonso and the Padres held a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first inning.

After four scoreless innings the Cubs pushed two across in the 5th inning. Anthony Rizzo reached base off of an error by Alonso that brought in Jonathan Herrera. Bryant got his first career hit that was a RBI to center field that brought in Dexter Fowler and the Cubs tied the game at two apiece.

In the 6th inning it was Miguel Montero who hit a solo shot to left center that gave the Cubs the 3-2 advantage. They would be back at it in the 7th inning when Starlin Castro hit a RBI single to score Rizzo. Montero followed with his second bomb of the game when he hit a 2-run shot to right. With the Cubs up 6-2 many felt the game was over.

The Padres had something to say about that as they made a huge rally in the 9th. Justin Upton started thing off with a RBI single that brought in Alonso. Will Middlebrooks followed with a RBI double that brought in Kemp. Jedd Gyorko grounded out to third that brought home Kemp and the Padres trailed 6-5.

Yangervis Solarte came on as a pinch hitter and hit a single to right that scored Middlebrooks and the Padres tied the game at  6 a piece to force extra innings.

In the 11th Castro singled to left field to give the Cubs the 7-6 victory. The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon in the series finale.
